PUNK IS NOT DEAD

Green Day and Michael Mayer bring American Idiot musical to the Berkeley stage

Green Day’s 2004 album American Idiot is becoming a Berkely musical with the help of a Broadway director. Originally, the band had considered making the album into a movie, but when that fell through, director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, Thoroughly Modern Millie) suggested doing it as a musical.

The 75 minute musical featuring an onstage band and a cast of 19 will maintain the pace that Green Day fans are used to, without an intermission. Every song from American Idiot will be used in their original sequence following the emotional arc of the album. Interspersed among those will be two songs released as b-sides and four songs from 21st Century Breakdown. Rolling Stone has the full story about the play including interviews with Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer.

American Idiot will run September 4 to October 11 at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in Berkeley, California. Green Day will perform in Houston, August 8 at Toyota Center with special guests: Franz Ferdinand.
